German WWII Luftwaffe Radio/Air Gunner’s Badge (Fliegerschützenabzeichen für Bordfunker) by JMME-This badge was intended to be awarded to Air Gunners, Radio Operators and Mechanics who successfully completed two months of training in one of the positions, with a minimum of five operational flights. The badge could have been awarded should the recipient be wounded on an operational flight. It depicts a Luftwaffe eagle in flight, clutching in its claws a pair of arrow headed lightning bolts, surrounded by a wreath of half laurel leaves and half oak leaves. This is a top quality example with a nickel silver finish that remains nicely intact with minor toning. It has crisp details with little to no wear. This example was produced by the firm of JMME & Sohn of Berlin. The reverse features a barrel hinge soldered directly to the badge with a narrow, round, blunt tipped pin. The catch is “C” shaped round wire and soldered directly to the badge. The tombak hardware and pin retain a majority of their original silver finish. The eagle is nice and tight, exhibiting no wiggle. A wonderful example of this handsome badge!
