German WWII Numbered General Assault Badge for 50 Assaults, by Rudolf Karneth- This great-looking badge was given to personnel who supported an attack but were not eligible for Infantry or Armored Assault Badges. It was awarded to members of the Artillery, Engineers, Anti-Tank and Anti-Aircraft Units that served the Infantry or Armor in an auxiliary role in the conduct of the assault. Medical personnel were also eligible if they cared for wounded under close combat conditions. Being a numbered example, these conditions would have to have been met at least 50 times, which must have been quite a feat! The eagle and numbered box (finish partially intact) are produced in zinc, as is the wreath. The details are fantastic, remaining completely intact. The grey finish to the eagle remains mostly intact, with minor toning to the wreath. It is a multi-piece award, with the eagle being attached to the wreath via four rivets. The eagle’s beak is slightly pushed in, a characteristic of this manufacturer. The reverse is slightly stippled (another characteristic of RK badges) and features a crimped sheet metal hinge with a coke bottle-shaped (magnetic) pin. The catch is a flat wire, crimped into a round base, which is soldered to the reverse. The maker’s motto is seen on the right (as viewed) reverse, this is the initials “RK” (for Rudolf Karneth) inside a circle. A great example of a desirable badge!
