He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on March 26, 1944, while serving with 6.\/Kampfgeschwader 2. He earned the decoration in recognition of flying 196 combat sorties, which included 164 missions against England (approximately 90 of which were night operations).\u003cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eHe survived the war and died on February 21, 2003. This black and white photo has faded, it has a sepia look to it. This photo measures 5 inches (12.7cm) wide and 3 ½ inches (8.89cm) tall. Stein has signed the photo across his chest in blue ink.
