Mass “pilgrimages” of up to 5,000 people per day gathered at the base of Adolf Hitler’s Berghof mountain retreat in the Bavarian Alps during the 1930s. These crowds of admirers would wait for hours on the driveway or nearby paths, chanting “We want to see our Führer!” until he came outside to greet them or sign autographs. The phenomenon quickly turned the quiet Obersalzberg mountain into a heavily disrupted tourist area. Because the boisterous crowds blocked local roads and even ripped pickets off Hitler's fence for relics, the regime had to establish severe security restrictions. Large contingents of the SS were permanently stationed at the mountain to patrol the newly cordoned-off security zones. Here we have Hitler addressing some of these crowds outside of the Berghoff. It measures 3 ¼ inches (8.25cm) wide and 5 ¼ inches (13.33cm) long.
