This is an unusual photo, as we rarely get to see the house from this angle. You can see the throngs of people lined up the driveway that goes up to the house in expectation of just seeing the Führer. Mass “pilgrimages” of up to 5,000 people per day gathered at the base of Adolf Hitler’s Berghof mountain retreat in the Bavarian Alps during the 1930s. These crowds of admirers would wait for hours on the driveway or nearby paths, chanting “We want to see our Führer!” until he came outside to greet them or sign autographs. The phenomenon quickly turned the quiet Obersalzberg mountain into a heavily disrupted tourist area. Because the boisterous crowds blocked local roads and even ripped pickets off Hitler's fence for relics, the regime had to establish severe security restrictions. Large contingents of the SS were permanently stationed at the mountain to patrol the newly cordoned-off security zones. This is an original photo that was removed from a veteran’s photo album. The reverse shows remnants of the photo album black paper, where this was pasted.
