As the commander of the II. Battalion within Grenadier-Regiment 105 (72nd Infantry Division), he distinguished himself during the high-stakes defensive operations following the collapse of Army Group Centre in the summer of 1944. This award was a culmination of extreme resilience under heavy soviet fire. This is evidenced by the fact that just two months prior, in August 1944, he was wounded severely enough to earn the Wound Badge in Gold. Remember this decoration was reserved exclusively for those wounded five or more times or suffering severe permanent injuries in combat or even awarded after death. This black and white photo measures approx. 6 inches (15.24 cm) tall by 4 inches (10.16 cm) wide. It is signed on the right side in faded blue ink. Someone has written Press’ name on the back in two places. This photo was signed in the 1980’s when it was popular to write to surviving veterans to ask for memorabilia. This is in very good condition.
