German WWII Postcard of Knight’s Cross Recipient Major Helmut Wick-This is a classic Hoffman studio portrait of Wick wearing his Knights Cross. Helmut Wick had one of the most meteoric careers of all Luftwaffe aces. When he was KIA in action in November 1940, Wick was only 25 years old, yet he commanded an entire fighter wing - JG 2 - and was one of Germany's three top-scoring aces at the time. He earned the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves for the destruction of 56 enemy aircraft, making him the leading ace at the time. He participated in both the Battle of France, and the Battle of Britian. He was shot down near the Isle of Wight on the 28th of November 1940, most likely by the British ace John Dundas, who was himself shot down by Wick's wingman. Wick was posted as missing in action, presumed dead. There is an illustrated biography on Amazon that looks to be an interesting read on this young fella. The postcard itself is in very good condition. The reverse is setup in the traditional way, with the space for a note, and the address to the right, separated by the studio information. This is very clean and would make a nice addition to your Luftwaffe collection. Plus, he looks a little like the Boston actor Ben Affleck don’t you think?
