German WWII Second Model Luftwaffe Dagger by Klaas “THE FUNERAL DAGGER”- Do I have your attention? This is the rarely encountered example of this variant that has the black celluloid handle with silver twisted grip wire. The fittings are a beautiful airplane gray toned steel. These retain excellent details. The scabbard is the same with nice toning to the finish and beautiful airplane gray steel bands on the scabbard. The blade with the kissing cranes Klaas maker mark is mint with very obvious factory cross graining. Now here is the question, what was the use of these daggers? The best we can do is theorize, and that is that these were a special issue. We believe that these were worn when members of the Luftwaffe acted as pall bearers or honor guards at a funeral of one of their fallen comrades. There is no doubt in my mind that these daggers exist as I encountered my first one well over 40 years ago. Of course, I questioned the black grip, but based on the source which was one of my pickers who had acquired it directly from a veteran, it put my mind at ease relative to the originality. This is a rare variant of a second model Luftwaffe dagger. The overall condition of this example is excellent and this is only the second one I have ever handled.
