USMC Korean War era Purple Heart/Good Conduct Grouping-This grouping is for USMC First Sergeant (then PFC) William Rufus Hornsby Jr. He was born February 20, 1930 in Lexington, SC and passed away on March 19, 2013 in El Monte, CA. He was a police officer after his army service which included duty in both the Korean and Vietnam war. The medals are his unnamed Purple Heart and one of his Good Conduct medals (he was awarded it three times). His original certificate for the 3rd award of the Good Conduct Medal, dated 14 July 1957, is included. There is a copy of the notification of his receipt of the Purple Heart on US Navy hospital stationery. It is dated 29 December 1950 with the wound being received in Korea on 2 December 1950. The hospital was in San Francisco. The Good Conduct medal is named to him, it reads “William R Hornsby Jr., 1951”. His Honorable Discharge certificate, dated 3 April 1958, is included. He returned to service for the Vietnam conflict. There is a press photo included and we assume that William is one of the gents in it. There is a copy of the marine pamphlet titled “Get the Facts” as well. A great grouping!
