Unfortunately it has been de-nazified, and painted in this green paint. The DR marking on the reverse and the indentation of the wings are still in pace, but this has been scratched over to remove it. When you open the lantern case, you can see the lantern mechanism. This is still marked for the maker Hugo Zweigle, Esslingen you can see the Reichsbahn insignia, and a D.B. Unfortunately someone has painted over the date in gold paint, but it appears to read either 1937 or 1939, it is hard to make out. The bottom of the carbide pan is also marked in the same manner. The glass plates are in place. The doors open as they should. This lantern stands 9 inches (22.86cm) tall and approx. 4 inches (10.16cm) wide. Usually this comes with three lenses, one in clear, one in green and another in red. Unfortunately, the colored lenses are missing but you could certainly replace if you chose to. You can remove the lens doors which still have the glass protectors. The carbide mechanism is still in place. If you are not familiar with carbide lanterns, let me quickly tell you how it works. Thanks to our buddy Gene in our office, I learned that there is an upper reservoir on this lantern, that you fill with water. There is a small threaded valve that controls the rate of the water. The water drips into the chamber containing the calcium carbide. This causes a reaction that releases acetylene gas, which burns, hence your lantern light. An acetylene gas powered lamp produces a bright, broad light.
