German SA Early Sports Badge in Bronze-This is produced in zinc with a bronze finish that is mostly missing. The remaining zinc has toned to a nice dark silver color. This is the earlier pattern, and it is marked by Berg & Nolte with serial number 46905, and the words “Eigentum der SA Sportabzeichen Hauptstelle: (Property of the SA Sports Badge Headquarters)”. The pin has a pointed end that is secured by a flat wire catch that is slightly loose but functions perfectly. A very good example of an easily recognizable badge!
History: The SA Sports badge in bronze was instituted by SA-Stabschef Ernst Röhm in November of 1933 and was awarded to SA and SS personnel who passed the required criteria in physical fitness, military defense and field exercises. In February of 1935, to inspire the German public to greater levels of physical fitness. Hitler conferred official national status to the badge and expanded it to include a silver and gold grade. When the badges gained official national status, bestowal was opened to all German nationals who were strongly encouraged to qualify for award of one of the three grades.
