Veteran Bring Back German WWII War Merit Cross 1st Class w/Swords Screwback-This is a very scarce variation of the WMC. This specific badge retains approx. 50% of its original silver finish. The zinc has toned to a darker gray color, which gives this award a nice vintage look. The badge is slightly convex to allow it to fit nicely to the tunic. This has an unusual screwback assembly on the reverse. There is a small stabilizing pin to hold this in place, stopping it from spinning. This is in very good condition. We purchased this from a family of a veteran and will supply the name to the buyer.
History: The War Merit Cross was instituted in October 1939, in two classes with both classes issued, with and without swords. These were awarded to military personnel and civilians, including females and foreigners, for exemplary service and/or bravery in Germany’s war effort, in a non-combatant role. The addition of swords to the award signified bravery while awards without swords were bestowed for service.
