German WWII Luftwaffe Observers Badge by Paul Maybauer-Desirable example! This badge was awarded for two months of flying service with a non-operational squadron, or to an individual who had taken part in five operational sorties. It was instituted on 26 March 1936. This zinc example is very good. It retains strong details. This is a multipiece example with the eagle being tightly held in place with two prongs. The finish to the eagle is missing. The zinc has toned to a dark gray color. This retains some lighter points on the wreath, but for the most part has lost its original silver finish. The reverse displays the same toning. There is a thin, round pin on a rugged barrel hinge. The round wire catch is in place. The pin setup functions as intended. The back side of the eagle is stamped for P. Meybauer Berlin".  A good example for your Luftwaffe collection.

History: The Observers qualification badge was introduced by Hermann Göring on March 26th, 1936 as an award to Observers, Navigators and Bombardiers who had met the required criteria. The Observers badge was awarded on an individual basis and criteria for bestowal included five operational flights over enemy territory or a minimum of two months active service.
