He served primarily with Sturzkampfgeschwader 1 (StG 1), a specialist dive-bomber wing operating the Ju 87 Stuka, and later with Schlachtgeschwader 1 (SG 1) flying the Fw 190.He flew a total of 812 combat missions, mostly on the Eastern Front. On October 20, 1944, his aircraft was shot down by Soviet anti-aircraft fire (flak) over enemy territory. He was taken as a prisoner of war by the Soviet Union and was not released until October 1949. This card measures approx. 6 inches (15.24cm) tall and 4 inches (10.16 cm) wide. It contains a nice signature across the front as well as a note on the back with a second signature. This also contains a note written in blue ink and dated 1986. We have not translated the note. This is in very good condition overall. This would make an awesome research project!
