Third Reich SD Service Uniform and Breeches, Private Purchase and Named and Researched to Officer-This grouping is for an untersturmführer (lieutenant) of the Sicherheistdienst, or SD. The tunic is tailor made in a very fine black tricot wool that is in excellent condition, with ever so slight wear only. There are padded shoulders and French cuffs. There is a four button closure and all buttons are silver finished pebbled metal with the exception of the belt ramp buttons which are gilt finished. There are four pockets with scalloped flaps. The breast pockets are pleated and the hip pockets are internal. The front and lower edge of the lay down collar are piped in silver bullion twist rope. The collar tabs are black badge cloth with the same silver bullion twist rope piping. The left side is the rank tab, it has three small brass pips with a toned nickel silver finish. The right side is the SD tab which is always blank as is the case here. The right shoulder has a single sew in shoulder strap of black badge cloth with six rows of silver twist rope bullion piping. The underside of the shoulder strap has a black cloth SS RZM tag dated 1936. The left sleeve has a handsome SS armband of red wool. It is held on by a single stitch. It has a separately applied white ribbed cloth disc with a multi piece cloth tape swastika. It is piped in black tape at the upper and lower edges. Lower down the left sleeve is a really scarce officer SD diamond of black badge cloth with silver bullion twist rope piping and the letters SD in silver flat wire. Also seen is the original and correct cuff title of black woven cloth and silver flat wire piping at the upper and lower edges. The left breast pocket has two sets of loops for badges. There are loops for a long medal or ribbon bar as well. Each of these shows signs of long time use. The interior is fully lined in black artificial silk that is very clean. There is a large pocket on the left side. The outside of the pocket has a large tailor tag which indicates the tailor was Toni Henrichs, Köln. Inside the pocket is a tailor name tag. The SD member was named Herm Henning and the date is listed as January 1939. There is a waist belt of black artificial silk with a silver plated metal buckle. The breeches are produced in a black tricot wool that is identical to the tunic. They are also in excellent condition with extremely minor wear. The lower legs have tie closures. There are slash type, buttoned hip pockets, a single rear pocket with a scalloped flap and a watch fob pocket with plated metal ring. There is a four button fly with a single button at the waist closure. There are straps at the hips with plated blue buckles as well as buttons for suspenders, a set of which is included. The waist is a size 34 and these are 36” in length. The interior is lined in striped rayon and white cotton. Outstanding!

SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer 30.01.1942 Gau: Koln-Aachen |
Documents relating to his service in the SD that show he was in Koln are attached.
He was in the Kriminalpolizei in Koln.
Walter Hennig ended the war as a SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer (in the SD) and held the rank of Kriminalrat in the Kriminalpolizei (Kripo) in Koln (Cologne).
This from AI:
Walter Erich Hennig was indeed a specific, high-ranking detective within the Nazi police apparatus in Cologne. Records from the era confirm his deployment and active involvement in the state's apparatus of wartime terror: [1, 2]
His Ranks & Postings
- Kriminalrat & SS-Hauptsturmführer: In documents dating to 1944, Hennig held the civil rank of Kriminalrat (promoted to this rank around 1 November 1940). His aligned SS rank was SS-Hauptsturmführer (Captain). [1]
- Stationing: He was stationed at the Kripoleitstelle Köln (the regional Criminal Police headquarters for Cologne), residing in the Köln-Sülz district during the war. [1]
Involvement in Nazi Persecution
Wartime records and postwar legal investigations tie Kriminalrat Hennig to the brutal execution of Nazi racial-biological policies:
- The "Zigeunerfragen" Desk: Research into the persecution of Sinti and Roma confirms that the specialized regional desk for "Zigeunerfragen" (Gypsy Affairs) at the Cologne Kripoleitstelle was, for a period, under Hennig's direct command. [1]
- Role in Genocide: This specific desk was responsible for registering, tracking, restricting, and ultimately coordinating the forced deportations of Sinti and Roma from the Rhineland to concentration and death camps (such as Auschwitz-Birkenau).
Another case was that of Walter Hennig from the Cologne Criminal Police headquarters (*Kripoleitstelle*), who for a time oversaw the local department for "Gypsy affairs." Although it was documented that he had supervised the deportations of Sinti and Roma, the Cologne denazification tribunal (*Spruchkammer*) classified him merely as a "follower" (*Mitläufer*). In 1950, he attempted to apply for a position at the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).
