Scarce Set of US Army Corp Airforce Sunglasses-According to the paper label under the lid of the leather glasses case, these are identified as Flying Sun Type 1 glasses from the American Optical Company. These sunglasses are wire framed with green tinted lenses that are clear and scratch free. This model is an upgrade from the previous model, and is supposed to have a more comfortable earpiece. The “flying sun” was supposed to be a more comfortable pair overall, and this design was standardized in the fall of 1941. The government chose the color of the lenses. The green was supposed to allow for 50% of incoming visible light. This was proven to be insufficient, and the later redesigns had the lenses darkened. The leather case is good quality and has a front snap that still functions as intended. There are some decorative elements to the leather case. This pair is nicely named on the reverse to a US Lieutenant H. Switzer with an ASN number that looks like 0854531. These are excellent and would make for a fun research project.
