German Model 1871 Dress Bayonet-This is something we do not see very often. This long model 1871 Dress bayonet is often called a "walking-out" or parade bayonet. It is a ceremonial sidearm modeled after the combat bayonet used with the Mauser Model 1871 rifle. The hilt is constructed of brass with a ribbed grip. There is a locking mechanism with a screw in the center. The crossguard is a nickel plated steel. The finish on the hilt and crossguard are 95% intact. The crossguard is a hooked quillon. This is designed upward on one end, and downward on the other, to fit over the muzzle ring. The steel scabbard is covered in leather that is excellent. The brass fittings are good. The lower scabbard fitting shows light denting and has a spot of corrosion to the obverse. Overall, the finish and tone are very good. The top fitting is loose and will come off of the scabbard easily, so take care with this one. This comes with a leather frog and a correct knot. The frog is in very good condition. The knot is frayed and frankly is showing some of its age. It still looks good, but you can see fraying to the straps. I think we all show some fraying after reaching 155 years old. The blade is very good. This is double engraved, but the engraving is so light you hardly see it. You can see faint remnants of the etching on both sides, but again, this is very light. There is no maker mark on this blade. Overall, this early dress bayonet is in very good condition, with a few liabilities. A very nice offering.
