Polished steel blade with blunted tip, serrated lower edge, and with fullers running most of the length of each side. The reverse of the blade is nicely stamped “Ges. Geschützt” just behind the cross guard, indicating a legally protected design. Nicely preserved nickel-plated alloy hilt, retaining lacquer throughout with the obverse of the cross guard bearing an oval medallion topped by a DRK-style German national eagle. Intact brown leather buffer pad. Two pebbled black bakelite grip plates secured together with dual magnetic metal rivets. Edge unit stamped “772 Leipzig” Steel scabbard retains 95% of the original black paint with nickel plated magnetic tip and throat fittings. Intact lug for the accommodation of a frog. The throat of the scabbard retains a functional spring catch to firmly hold the hewer in place during storage. Hewer demonstrates minor issues consistent with age and wear, including some very minor spotting to the blade, minor sporadic loss of scabbard paint. Measuring ca 41.5 cm in total length. Desirable unit marked examples are rarely encountered. Near excellent!
