German WWI Imperial Sword by Wilh. Stahl-This early sword measures a total length of 38 inches (96.52cm) with a blade that measures 32 inches (81.28cm) long. The hilt and dove head pommel are made of brass. This has a dark gray sharkskin handle, with a silver twisted wire grip wrap. The handle is very good. The scabbard is made of silvered steel, that has an interesting chrome like look. The blade is very good. It is marked with “Eisen Hauer” which actually translates to iron hewer in German. The makermaker’s name is along the backstrap. This reads Wilh Stahl, and this is superimposed with a number 495 which could be a rack or lot number. Stahl was a master sword cutler who was operating around the turn of the century. These outfitters usually purchased high end blades from Solingen and hand assembled custom hilts and scabbards to each officer’s specifications. They often etched their names onto the spines of the blades. This is a very desirable early sword in very sound condition.
