German WWI M1898/05 Butcher Bayonet by Erfurt-This bayonet measures approx. 20 inches (50.8cm) in length total with a blade that measures 14 ½ inches (36.83cm). The steel fittings on the pommel and crossguard have a nice dark tone. The mortise button functions as it should. The pommel is well marked with proof marks. The crossguard is dated 1920. This has the original grooved wood grips in an attractive walnut color. These are evenly worn, and any chips have worn smooth. The steel scabbard retains 95% of its original anodized finish. It does have two small dents, but this is not a distraction. The blade ricasso is maker-marked Crown / ERFURT, indicating manufacture at the Royal Erfurt Arsenal, located in Thuringia. The spine is proof marked Crown / W directly in front of the cross guard, for Kaiser Wilhelm II, the German Emperor. Under this is 08, indicating acceptance in 1908. The bluing on this blade is excellent. These are getting harder to find. This one is a beauty!
