German WWII Luftwaffe Air Gunner/Radio Operator Badge by W. Deumer-This has lost the majority of its original finish. The remaining zinc has toned to a nice gun metal gray color. This pin has great details. The obverse depicts an oval laurel and oak leaf wreath, with a diving eagle clutching a set of lightning bolts. The reverse portrays the classic makers mark “W. Deumer Lüdenscheid”. The toning and details on this badge are stunning. The pin and catch setup function as intended. This is a good looking badge.
History: Air Gunner qualification badge was introduced by Hermann Göring on March 26th, 1936, as an award to radio operators, air gunners and mechanics who had met the required criteria. The Wireless Operator/Air Gunner badge was awarded on an individual basis and the main criteria for bestowal was the completion of five operational flights over enemy territory or a minimum of two months active service.
