German WWII Original Signed Photo of Knights Cross Winner Friedrich Piefer-Piefer was Fahnenjunker-Oberfeldwebel, a rank similar to a Master Sergeant and acted as Deputy leader of the 2nd Company, Grenadier-Regiment 464. He was awarded the honor on September 2, 1944 for actions while his company was engaged in heavy defensive operations against Soviet forces along the Vistula River. Piefer personally led a decisive counterthrust against the advancing Soviets. His tactical leadership during the assault successfully stabilized the German defensive line in that sector. This black and white photo measures 6 inches (15.24 cm) tall by 4 inches (10.16 cm) wide. It is signed on the right side in faded blue ink. Someone has written Piefer’s name on the back in two places. This photo was signed in the 1980’s when it was popular to write to surviving veterans to ask for memorabilia. This is in very good condition. Piefer survived the war and passed away in Westphalia in 1986.
