German WWII Photo Signed by Knights Cross Recipient August Weiler-Weiler was Captain of the Bataillonsführer regiment “Von Stossel”, near Metz a city in France. In September 1944, as Allied forces advanced into France, the German army reorganized its defenses around the fortified city of Metz. There were several forts around this city. Here is where the Germans had dug in. These forts were positioned to provide mutual artillery support to impede the American advance. The deep, buried fortifications of the forts held up well against American artillery, but they eventually fell after a series of violent assaults by the Americans. There were heavy casualties on both sides, but the Third Army commanded by Patton was able to take the forts eventually. August Weiler won his knights cross for defending these forts, and allowing an organized retreat of German forces. He was awarded the medal on November 16th, 1944. This is signed black and white photo of Weiler. black and white photo measures 5 inches (12.7cm) tall by 3 ½ inches (8.89cm) wide. It is in very good condition. It comes with the original mailing envelope. There is also a nice thank you note from Weiler.
