German WWII Signed Photo of Knights Cross Winner Hermann Plocher-Plocher was born in 1901. He became a German General in the Luftwaffe and later the Bundeswehr. He earned the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves during 1943, as Generalmajor for his leadership of the 4. Flieger-Division and the 6. Fallschirmjäger-Division. This award, decreed under Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz's authority amid the collapsing Reich, recognized Plocher's direction of defensive operations in the Netherlands that halted a breakthrough by the Canadian 5th Armoured Division toward the Afsluitdijk, crediting the "heroic resistance" of his paratrooper forces against superior Allied armor and infantry.[2] The honor was unnumbered but retrospectively tallied as the 867th conferral of the Oak Leaves grade, reflecting its status among the final wartime decorations issued in desperation to sustain command cohesion as German forces capitulated the following day. He was captured by Allied forces in 1945 and released in 1947. Plocher contributed post-war to U.S. Air Force historical efforts by authoring detailed accounts of Luftwaffe operations on the Eastern Front, including The German Air Force versus Russia, 1943. He survived the war and died in 1980. This black and white photo measures 5 inches (12.7cm) tall and 3 ½ inches (8.89cm) wide. The photo is signed at the top right in blue ink. This photo was signed in the 1980’s when it was popular to write to these living veterans to get memorabilia. This would be a fun person to research more.
