WWII German Carbide Railroad Reichsbahn Lantern-Very interesting piece of field gear which is often times associated with railway lanterns because of the multiple colors of the lenses. This is made of brown bakelite. It stands approximately 9 inches high. The body itself is approximately 9 inches (22.86cm) high. Usually this comes with three lenses, one in clear, one in green and another in red. Unfortunately, the colored lenses are missing but you could certainly replace if you chose to. You can remove the lens doors which still have the glass protectors. It has a bakelite carrying handle and body. A hook on the reverse for hanging. This hook has a waffenamt. Overall choice, untouched and quite scarce. If you are not familiar with carbide lanterns, let me quickly tell you how it works. Thanks to our buddy Gene in our office, I learned that there is an upper reservoir on this lantern, that you fill with water. There is a small threaded valve that controls the rate of the water. The water drips into the chamber containing the calcium carbide. This causes a reaction that releases acetylene gas, which burns, hence your lantern light. An acetylene gas powered lamp produces a bright, broad light.
