WWII German "Maskenbrille" Eyeglasses for Gas Masks-These eyeglasses are very interesting as these were specifically designed to be worn with the gas mask. These were issued for frontline use to soldiers who required vision aids. Glasses were not allowed to be worn on the battlefield (since you needed to have 20/20 vision in order to join up. This was true for both the German’s as well as US), these were the only ones allowed. The Dienstbrille service glasses were issued without a prescription, but you had a prescription card you had to get filled out by the doctor. The problem with these issued lenses is that the metal clips on the side prevented the gas mask from fitting tightly against the face. Therefore, these Maskenbrille glasses were issued. They have short v-shaped double arms hinged to the front, with adjustable cotton straps sewn in place. These straps were looped around the ears and did not interfere with the fit of the gas mask. These eyeglasses measure 40 mm wide by 112 mm long. The eyeglasses come in their original tin case, which is nicely marked with Maskenbrille on the top. There is a small number tag on the lenses, the number 6862 matches the M6862 stamped in black on the front of the case. Very cool. There is a prescription card included that sits in the bottom of the case under the gray felt covered bottom. There are also blue/gray cloth straps. The gray finish on this case is excellent. These would look great in anyone’s display.
