WWII USMC Pilot Grouping for Captain-This grouping includes a service tunic and straight legged trousers for a United States Marine Corps pilot named Kenneth A Vermillion. This tunic is from WWII when he was a captain. He eventually was promoted to the rank of major. He had a brother, Captain Calvin K. Vermillion, that was killed on 5/4/1944 in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains in California while flying a Goodyear FG-1A Corsair fighter plane. An aviator like his brother, he served with Marine Fighting Squadron 222 (VMF-222) which was activated and fought during World War II. Known as "The Flying Deuces," they fell under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 14 (MAG-14) and fought in many areas of the Pacific War, including the Philippines campaign (1944–45) and the Battle of Okinawa. During the war, the squadron was credited with shooting down 53 enemy aircraft and was the sister squadron to VMF-215. They were deactivated on 31 December 1949. Onto the loot, which starts with a tailor made, summer weight, named tunic that is produced in light olive drab wool that is of a very good quality. There is minor wear, a small hole or two and discoloration from age and use. There is a four button closure and all buttons except for the lowest one are EGA style. There are brass lapel EGA’s plated metal captains bars on the shoulder straps. Ribbon bars include the Marine Corps Commendation medal, Air Medal, American Campaign Medal with Campaign Star and the WWII Victory Medal. Just above is a beautiful Marine Corps Naval Aviator (wings) pin. These have the maker mark for Hilborn-Hamburger, Inc and are marked Sterling and 1/20 10k. The interior is partially lined in gold rayon. It is very clean. There is a pocket on the right side which has a tailor tag inside. This says “Made Exclusively for K A Vermillion, 10-15-43”. The matching trousers are straight legged and very clean. There are hip and rear pockets. There is a four button fly with an additional button at the waist. There is also a watch fob pocket. There are buttons for underwear etc inside. The interior is partially lined in off white cotton. The waist is a size 30 and these are 41” in length. A desirable set in fine condition overall!
