German WWII Signed Photo of Knights Cross Winner Herbert Wittmann-Wittmann was a highly decorated Oberst in the Luftwaffe during World War II, and one of only 882 recipients of the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. He was awarded his Knights Cross on 23 November 1941 as Hauptmann and Staffelkapitän of the Stabsstaffel/ Kampfgeschwader 53 "Legion Condor". He was also awarded the 735th Oak Leaves on 11 February 1945 as Major and Gruppenkommandeur of the II./Kampfgeschwader 53 "Legion Condor".  The 53 Legion Condor was a Luftwaffe bomber wing during World War II. They provided tactical and ground support.  Its units participated on all of the fronts in the European Theatre until it was disbanded in May 1945. It participated in the invasion of Poland, France, and the Battle of Britian. It was then moved on to the battle of Stalingrad. Wittmann went on to survive the war, and joined the post-war Deutsche Luftwaffe in 1956, retiring in 1972. He passed in 2007 in Pullach Germany. This black and white photo is excellent. The signature can be clearly seen across the photo.  This black and white photos measures approx. 5 ½ inches (13.97cm) tall and 3 ½ inches (8.89cm) wide. The letter and mailing envelope are also included.
